DENVER, CO: Colorado United Credit Union recently awarded two of its student members with the John Flynn Scholarship. Each scholarship is worth $1,000 and is offered to any member who is seeking to further his or her education at an institution of higher learning, including: vocational school, community college, a four-year college or university or any other educational pursuit as deemed appropriate by the application committee. Members began applying for the scholarship February 1, 2006 in order to meet a March 31, 2006 deadline. There were eight applicants total.
The selection criteria included academic achievement and financial need as well as a will to succeed, leadership, and community involvement. Scholarship applicants were required to complete the application form; provide two letters of recommendation from a teacher, employer or community leader; provide a copy of their high school or post high school transcript; and write a 600 word essay about either the history of credit unions or the difference between credit unions and banks.
"The John Flynn Scholarship was created to give back to our members and show our support for exceptional students," said Branda Anderson, President/CEO of Colorado United. "We are proud to offer this scholarship on a yearly basis and help our younger members continue their education and make a positive impact in our community."

He also improved his city’s appearance by repainting fire hydrants. Moreover, he educated his classmates on the importance of preserving rainforests after traveling to a rainforest in Peru with the Children’s Environmental Trust group. His goal is to open his own sports therapy business.
”I want to open my own sports therapy business. To do this I am going to attend the Leads School of Business at the University of Colorado to get a business degree and then I plan to go to the University of Colorado at Denver to get the medical training that I need to open my business.”
Rachel Garcia – Iver C. Ranum High School
Rachel Garcia will be attending the University of Colorado at Boulder this fall where she will begin her Bachelor’s degree in Integrated Physiology. Garcia has been a member of Colorado United for five years. She has contributed to her community by serving on the Hyland Hills Youth Council where she plans projects within the community. She is a participant in International Baccalaureate Organization’s Diploma Programme. In addition, she has played competitive softball for five years. Her goal is to become a doctor.
”I will go to CU at Boulder this fall, and I plan to earn a B.A. in the pre-medical field. I hope to go to medical school right after undergrad school. I want to be a doctor, but I am unsure of what I want to specialize in at this time. My career as a doctor will allow me to help people on a daily basis, which is very important to me.”
